Current position
Sox News carries no advertising and no sponsored content at the time of writing. This policy is published in advance so that the rules exist before the first commercial arrangement rather than after it.
Separation
- Commercial activity is handled by the commercial function. Editorial decisions are made by the Sox News Editorial Desk.
- No advertiser or sponsor sees editorial content before publication, influences a commissioning decision, or receives notice of coverage that concerns them.
- No advertiser or sponsor holds a veto, a review right or an approval right over any editorial item.
- Advertising is never a factor in whether a story runs, how prominently it runs, or what it concludes.
- Buying advertising buys advertising space. It buys nothing editorial.
Labelling
Any commercial item is labelled clearly, in the same place a reader looks for the content type label, and the label travels with the item.
- Sponsored on the card, on the article page, in the structured data and in the feed.
- The sponsor is named at the top of the item, before the body text.
- Sponsored items are excluded from the editorial lead, from the numbered weekly edition table of contents, and from the Google News sitemap.
- Sponsored items are never written to imitate a Sox News report. Typography, labelling and byline make the difference obvious.
What we will not accept
- Advertising that misrepresents a product, a price or a risk.
- Advertising from a party, campaign, government body, state broadcaster or state linked entity.
- Advertising placed on condition of coverage, of a link, or of the removal of an item.
- Native items where the buyer requires editorial staff to write the copy in an editorial voice.
Affiliate links and commissions
Sox News uses no affiliate links today. If it does, every affiliate link will be disclosed on the page carrying it, no recommendation will be made because of a commission, and product judgements will remain the editorial judgement of the desk.
Reader revenue
Reader supported products, including any paid subscription or membership, buy access. They buy no influence over coverage, and no subscriber list is sold.
