Why every item carries a label
A reader should be able to tell, before reading a sentence, whether a piece is reporting what happened, arguing a case, or paid for by someone. Sox News shows a content type label on every homepage card, every archive row, every article page and every entry in the weekly edition.
The five labels
A report of what happened, sourced to the record. Any view carried in the piece is separated and marked.
Structured data type: NewsArticle
Establishes the facts, then explains the incentives at work and the consequences that follow. Carries an argued Sox News view in a marked block.
Structured data type: AnalysisNewsArticle
An argued position, written to persuade. Presented under the Sox News name or a named writer, never as a neutral report.
Structured data type: OpinionNewsArticle
A recorded conversation, edited for length and clarity, with the subject's words attributed to the subject.
Structured data type: NewsArticle
Paid for by a third party, disclosed at the top of the page and in every card. No sponsor sees or influences editorial coverage.

How the label is produced
The label is derived from the article's own metadata rather than typed by hand on each page, so a card and the article it links to can never disagree.
- If the article record carries an explicit `contentType`, that value is used.
- If the record is marked as sponsored, the label is Sponsored regardless of anything else.
- Interviews are recognised from the interview desk metadata and the interview format.
- A piece that carries an argued Sox News view in a marked block is labelled Analysis, because it is more than a report.
- Anything else is labelled News, which is the safe fallback.
The type is decided once, from the full article record, and stored on that record and on the front page index. A card and the article it links to therefore read the same stored value rather than each inferring one from a different subset of the metadata.
Because every Sox News item published so far carries a marked Sox News view alongside its reporting, every item published so far is labelled Analysis. That is the accurate description of the format, and the label will change on a piece the day the format does. A straight report with no argued view will carry News.
One shared rule set implements this in the browser and in the build, so the label on a card, the label on the article page, the label in the weekly edition and the article type in the structured data all come from the same function. If the metadata is missing or malformed, the label falls back to News rather than disappearing or breaking a link.
Marked blocks inside a piece
Where an item combines reporting with an argued view, the view is separated into its own block and headed as such, so the reporting can be read on its own. Room for disagreement is stated in the piece, with the strongest version of the opposing case.

Each label maps to a schema.org article type so machines read the same distinction readers see: News to NewsArticle, Analysis to AnalysisNewsArticle, Opinion to OpinionNewsArticle, Interview to NewsArticle with an interview genre, and Sponsored to AdvertiserContentArticle.
