Human accountability

A human editor is accountable for every published item. Publication requires a named human sign off recorded internally, and that person answers for accuracy, fairness, sourcing, labelling and corrections on the piece. The Editorial Desk byline means the item is the institutional work of that desk rather than the work of a single credited writer, and it does not mean no person is responsible for it.

In practice that means four things.

  1. Every item has an accountable editor before it is published, recorded in the internal publishing record.
  2. That editor is answerable for the accuracy of the facts, the fairness of the treatment, the strength of the sourcing and the correctness of the content type label.
  3. Complaints about a piece are handled by a person, in writing, under the complaints policy.
  4. Corrections are made by a person, logged, and shown on the affected page.

A desk byline such as Sox News US Desk indicates institutional authorship. It never indicates automated authorship without a responsible human, and it never removes anyone's responsibility.

Named editors and contributors

No named editors or contributors are published yet. Sox News lists the desk and its responsibilities honestly rather than inventing people to fill the page. Each appointment appears here, with the role, the remit and the date it took effect, as soon as it is confirmed.

Sox News publishes real names only. It does not invent staff, pseudonymous bylines or fictional correspondents to appear larger than it is. As appointments are confirmed, each name, role and area of responsibility appears here and on the contributors page, with the date the appointment took effect.

Where responsibility sits legally

Legal responsibility for published material rests with Sox Media LLC. Editorial responsibility rests with the Editor. Where a piece carries an individual byline, that writer is responsible for their reporting and their argument, and the accountable editor remains responsible for publishing it.
